Frequently Asked Questions
Who are you?
We’re a team of book publishers who want to contribute to discussions about the state of our world, and we’re doing it the only way that we know how: by publishing books.
Why are your books free?
Because we want people to read them.
Many readers have limited time and money so competition for their attention is fierce. Publishers fight over this attention in the hope of turning a profit. That’s their goal. And they achieve their goal by publishing what they think people will buy. This profit-driven model leaves little room for risk or experimentation. Commercial priorities decide who and what get published.
Rather than become another independent press competing against the multinationals, we’ve created a new space, outside the influence of market forces, where we can publish who and what we think the world needs to read.
Removing profit from the heart of publishing opens up new opportunities, not only for authors but for readers. Publishing books as freely available ePubs broadens their potential readership far beyond what we could achieve as a commercial press.
Does ‘free’ mean poor quality?
Not at all. Making books available as free digital downloads (i.e. open access) has been the go-to model in STEM publishing for decades because academics want a global readership to engage with their ideas and research. We want to bring this model to fiction publishing where breaking down financial and geographical barriers is just as important.
Why do you only publish digitally?
Our model only works as a digital press. Printing introduces substantial costs, risk, logistical issues and administrative work. It’s very difficult to print books on a non-profit basis.
